The Royal Automobile Association (RAA) has raised concerns following a significant 58% increase in serious motorcycle crashes in South Australia over a five-year period.
Between 2019 and 2023, the state recorded 966 serious motorcycle crashes, up from 611 in the preceding five years.

This surge is particularly alarming given a 3% decline in the number of individuals holding full motorcycle licenses during the same timeframe. Notably, 10% of riders involved in fatal crashes lacked a valid license, highlighting issues related to unlicensed riding.

Demographic analysis reveals that 93% of individuals involved in casualty crashes were male, with riders aged 16 to 28 accounting for approximately 34% of these incidents. Additionally, 46% of fatal crashes were run-off-road incidents, such as rollovers or collisions with fixed objects, underscoring the heightened risks associated with regional road conditions.

Charles Mountain, RAA's Senior Manager of Road Safety, emphasised the importance of rider vigilance, especially during adverse weather conditions. "We don't want to see any more riders lose their lives, and plead with motorcyclists to be safe, especially with rain, wind, and uneven road surfaces making riding even more hazardous over winter," he stated.

For motorcyclists seeking financing options, it's crucial to consider safety measures and ensure compliance with licensing requirements. Prospective riders are encouraged to invest in appropriate safety gear, including helmets, jackets, pants, gloves, and boots, to mitigate injury risks.

As the motorcycle community continues to grow, fostering a culture of safety and responsibility remains paramount. Riders are urged to adhere to speed limits, ride according to road conditions, and prioritize ongoing skill development to enhance their safety on the road.
